Natural Disasters

A LabLinks Project for Blue Heron 3rd graders
Oh Oh! You just found out that your Mom and Dad are thinking about leaving the cold winter weather of Minnesota behind. They are talking about moving to the Island of Namboomboo. They have told you that it is a fantastic place to live - there are beautiful beaches, heaps of sunshine, everything you could ask for..... best of all, no snow!
There is, however, a slight problem. The island seems to have a high
number of natural disasters, for example, earthquakes, floods, tornados and hurricanes. As if that wasn't enough, the local volcano, Mount Banatu, started to grumble recently, belching thick black ash into the atmosphere.
Your Task: You are worried that your parents might really sell your house and move to the island. Since you like winter weather and don't want to leave Minnesota you need to let your Mom and Dad know about the kinds of natural disasters that happen on the island. In order to do that you need to find out more about these types of disasters. Then you need to let your parents know what you have discovered so they will not move to the island. Its a good thing you are also learning about disasters with your other teachers.
How?
1. Select a partner to work with.
2. Then work together to discover more about each of the island's natural disasters by looking at the information on web sites listed on the next page.
3. When you have all the facts, work with your partner and use KidPix to create a picture about one natural disaster.
4. Mrs. Richardson will use your pictures to make a KidPix Slide show to play for your whole class.
5. Then Mr. See will put your slide show on the Blue Heron web page. Be sure to show it to your parents. Hopefully what you have discovered will help your Mom and Dad decide to stay here in Minnesota. Good Luck!
