Jack and the Beanstalk
A LabLinks Project for Blue Heron 4th Graders.

Oh No! Jack wants to plant MORE bean seeds!

As you remember, in the story Jack and the Beanstalk, poor Jack trades his mother's cow for some beans. Jack throws these into his garden and to his surprise the beans grow into a giant beanstalk. After a great adventure with the giant, Jack and his mother regain their wealth and are happy. What you didn't find out in the book was..... after the story ends Jack decides he wants to plant another garden, including beans. But lazy Jack doesn't know how plants grow at all! You need to help Jack find out about plants and make a web page Jack can use to plan his garden. By the way, make sure your details are very clear because I think Jack needs all the help he can get!.

How? By researching plants and seeds. Record information you discover on the Research Notes Form. You can use that data later to help you make a brochure that Jack can look at before he plants his new garden, Do research to:
-find out how seeds become plants
-find out what plants need to make them grow

Remember, you will get your information from web sites on the Internet and then use the information you discover to make your "How to Grow Plants" brochure.

Use the links for each step listed below and follow all instructions. Remember to record your findings on the Research Notes Form using your best spelling and sentences.

Step 1: Watch Trees are Terrific to learn more about plants.

Step 2: Wow! Just think a tree starts from a seed. Lets find out more about how seeds become plants.
All About Seeds
How do Seeds Grow?

Step 3: Review the
seven things are needed for plants to grow? Add a list of these things to your Research Notes Form.

Now you are finished with your research and ready to begin plannng your "How Plants Grow" brochure for Jack to use as he plans his new garden. To do that you will become part of a production team. Each of you will be given a specific job to do in order to make the brochure. Wait for the teacher to assign your teams before going to the next section.

When you get your team assignment remember to search Google for a pictures that you can use for your brochure. When you find the ones you need, be sure to save them in your network folder so you can use it later.

Then the team should design and create your brochure. Be sure toinclude the information from your Research Notes Form in the design. Your teacher will print your brochure in color. Then we will send them all to Jack.

Your Teacher Says: Now we all know more about how plants grow. But I wonder what ever happened to Jack's new garden? Oh well, I guess we will never know, so be careful with any seeds you find!

Hey! Maybe Jack will e-mail us back and let us know how it all turns out? Who knows? Anyway watch out for snakes that may be hiding in your garden!
