A Pathfinder for Blue Heron Elementary School 2nd Graders
. Listen. What is that noise??? That eerie sound you hear is not a ghost. It is the call of the loon. The loon is Minnesota's state bird. Loons are more at home in the water than on land. Built like a torpedo, they swim under water in search of prey. Minnesota has more common loons than any other state except Alaska. This bird, whose ancestors roamed the earth 65 million years ago, can be found on many northern lakes in the summer. They come here to raise their young. In the fall they fly to the ocean coasts for the winter . If you get a chance to visit a northern lake this summer, listen for the haunting call of the loon. Until then use the web sites below to explore and discover more about loons ! HAVE FUN!
