The Case of the Scary School Spider
I don't like spiders, but some people do. Do you like spiders? Are you afraid of a little old spider? Many people do not know much about spiders, except that they are scary looking. That may be why they are scared.

The problem is, we just found out that there is a BIG spider loose in the school. No one wants to stay in the school because they are so afraid of the spider, it's called Arachnophobia. It's your job to be brave, and help everyone learn more about spiders so they can come back to school in comfort.

Your Mission
OK, so we know that spiders belong to a class of animals called Arachnids. Most spiders have eight eyes, and they do not have antennae or wings. Spiders can live anywhere on earth because they adjust to their environment. Not all spiders are poisonous, but there are a few that are. Spiders can spin a web of silk.

To solve this case you need will need to be a good detective to help people understand that they do not need to be afraid of all spiders. If you can answer the following questions it would help them feel a lot better. In order to do that you need to gather answers to these questions and make a KidPix Slide Show. It should include;

1. A diagram of a spider's body.

2.The name and picture of a spider you find interesting.

3. Use the Spider Case File Sheet to keep track of five interesting facts about your spider. Get the sheet from your teacher.

Detective Questions: Find five interesting facts about your spider. For example:

1. Does your spider have venom? If so, how does
it use it?

2. Is your spider harmful to humans?

3. Does your spider spin a web?

4. What does your spider eat?

5. What are your spider's enemies?

6. How long does your spider live?

Case Clues: Use the following web sites as references to help you in your research. You may also use encyclopedias and books if you can't find an answer to a certain questions.

Your Teacher Says: I just caught the spider that was scaring people in our school. Its the one crawling across the screen. I think I'll turn it loose in the iMac lab. Now that you are a spider expert and know so much about spiders..... what is there to be scared of anyway?
