"What You See Is What You Get"

A LabLinks Project for Blue Heron Elementary School

Don't Get Stung!
Do you believe everything you see and hear on television?
Do you believe everything you read in the newspapers?
Do you believe everything you read on a website?
I hope you said "NO!"

WHY? Because there are thousands of websites that contain inaccurate, biased and just plain stupid information. In this LabLinks project you are going to discover how to tell if a web site is reliable or just a waste of time.

HOW? Well, I could tell you how to determine if a website is reliable. I could make a list of things to look for and you could memorize it. Then I could give you a test which will grill you about all the details. Or you can check out a few websites and make up your own list. Then you could share your list with the other students and come up with our own class list. .

OK, I don't really have a list.
So you will have to make up your own anyway
!

Step 1: As a class we will use and discuss the LabLinks listed below.

Step 2: After the class discussion every person will create their own Web Site Reliability List.

Step 3: Then, as a group, we will discuss your individual lists and create "Web Site Reliability Rules" that we can post in the computer labs.

Step 4: Use the class "Web Site Reliability Rules" to make a HyperStudio stack about web site reliability that can be used by 5th graders at the beginning of school next year.
