Band Program Information ... The Centennial Middle
School Band Program educates approximately 750 middle school
students in instrumental music. There
are four bands in each of three grade levels (6-8), making twelve
all together. Each band meets on an every other day basis for
rehearsal,
and each
student meets with an individual instructor every eight school
days in groups of 1-2 in 6th and 7th grade, and 3-4 in 8th grade.
The CMS Band is staffed by 3.75 full time staff members educated
in instrumental music education.
Band Rehearsal ...
The CMS
Band Department uses Rehearsal Preps & Pieces (by
Rita Grethen Jarrard with Increase
Music)
for rehearsal in 6th grade, 21st Century Band Method Book
1 in
7th grade, and 21st Century Band Method Book 2 in
8th grade (by Belwin).
The method books are chosen specifically to corelate to fundamental
learning concepts aty each grade level of musical development,
and the individual lesson material. All bands perform twice during
the
school year.
Lessons
...
Students begin lesson
instruction during the two weeks of summer before their 6th grade
year. Students take one hour lessons in large groups 5 days
a week for both weeks. Once students begin middle school, they are
seen by an instrumental specialist every eight school days in groups
of 1-2 in 6th and 7th grades, and 3-4 in 8th grade. These lessons
last for 15 minutes. Students are expected to account for 120 minutes
of practice between lessons by a guardian-signed practice sheet.
The CMS Band Department uses Musical Magic Books 1&2 (by
Rita Grethen Jarrard with Increase
Music) during lessons in 6th and 7th grade. In 8th grade students
progress to books prescribed by their individual instructors.
Assessment
...
Band students
are formally assessed on their musical ability at
the end of each year. Assessments are done one on
one with the student's lesson instructor in a 10-15
minute timeframe. Student Assessment Sheets can be
found on this site with the "Practice Resources"
for each instrument. Teacher Performance Rating Rubrics
can be found at the top of this page under the "Files" heading.
This Performance Rating is combined with a sightreading
score from the Watkins-Farnum Standardized Performance
Scale to give an overall score to the assessment.
The assessment
does not affect a student's grade, although it is
used in conjuction with Graduation Standard requirements
in 7th grade and for equal placement when scheduling
bands.
