Thanks to school nutrition staff
Preparing healthy school meals, modeling healthy nutrition habits, and offering a friendly greeting are all in a day’s work for Centennial’s 56 school nutrition employees.
Their work in providing healthy, nutritious meals to children each day is especially noteworthy during School Nutrition Employee Week, May7-12.
For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of the day. In fact, federal regulations ensure that every school lunch offers students their choice of milk, two fruits or vegetables, a grain and a protein. School meals must also meet strict limits for fat, saturated fat and portion size. In the Centennial District, staff are:
- increasing the farm to school purchases and therefore more fresh fruit/vegetables
- reducing sodium
- increasing whole grain options
- maintaining food safety
- manage financially self-sufficient programs despite limited funds
- working with vendors to ensure products meet high standards and are acceptable to students.

Offer Versus Serve
Centennial Schools Food Service follows the USDA Offer Versus Serve option for meeting meal pattern requirements. For lunch, students are given the choice of five different food items: meat/meat alternate, bread/bread alternate, milk, fruit and vegetable. Students must select at least three of the five items. For breakfast, students are given a choice of four items: meat/meat alternate, bread/bread alternate, milk, and fruit/fruit juice. Students must select three of the four items. The Offer Versus Serve option provides more choices to students and minimizes food waste. If you have any questions, please call the cook/manager at your child's school or the district food service office at 763-792-5422. |
