Who is the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program at ACE for?
Any adult 17 years or older, who is not enrolled in a secondary school, is welcome to the program. It is free. Confidential assistance is provided to help each student meet his/her education goals.

What can you expect?
The program is learner-centered. The teacher and student assess the student’s academic needs. The goals of the student; career, job and personal are also discussed. This way the teacher and student get acquainted and then, together, design a unique, individualized education plan for the student. In other words, the student and teacher both decide what would be best for the student to work on.

The program helps with:

  • GED prep
  • Improving skills in reading, writing and math
  • College prep
  • Job skills

Since each student’s goals are different, there are no “classes”. During program hours, the teacher is available to teach skills to students individually. She also helps each student find the materials and methods that help him/her learn best. A trained tutor may be available, computer and video-assisted instruction, small group instruction, and cooperative learning between students is encouraged. It can be very helpful and fun.

The program is operated by Centennial Community Education and is party of the Metro North Consortium. Many resources are available. In an ABE program, the student takes responsibility for his/her own learning and the teacher is a “learning facilitator”.

Why should you try the center?
It is learner-centered. For a variety of reasons, many students experience difficulty in a conventional classroom where all the students are expected to learn the same concepts, from the same materials, at the same pace. Some students may have had, or now have, special learning needs. Some have faced personal obstacles or challenges that contributed to frustration and lack of success and it was tough on one’s self esteem. Frustration and lack of commitment, motivation, and success in school may have resulted. Many of us just need a different approach or review of basic academic skills that aren’t used often in our daily lives. The program has a variety of materials, self-paced learning, flexible hours and individual tutoring to help meet your needs. It also provides free childcare.

Most importantly, you don’t need to learn by yourself. You are not alone in your needs. ACE provides confidential help, but, chances are, you will find other students who have needs similar to yours. People need people – to cheer and to help them. If everyone could learn on his/her own – if everyone could pass the GED test by reading a book and doing the work by him/herself, there would be more libraries and no schools.

Besides improving academic skills, the center can also help improve a person’s self-esteem as he/she finds success.

How can you best use the center and feel comfortable?
People learn in different ways and it may take you, and the teacher, a few times to figure out how you can best use the program. Talk with the teacher about what works for you; ask questions and discuss your feelings about your progress.

Each student is encouraged to concentrate on the studies agreed upon in the learning contract. If a student’s concentration will be improved by taking a break or eating a snack, this is permissible. It is suggested that students try to work consistently for two hours before taking a break so interruptions are limited.

If the environment in the center is distracting, let the instructor know and the problem can be solved.

Feel free to browse among the materials. Some may be checked out and taken home. ACE staff are happy to assist you in finding materials to take home to continue your studies.
