Governor's Executive Order: Face Covering Mandate

Governor's Face Covering Mandate

The Governor’s Executive Order 20-81 announced today, July 22, mandates all Minnesotans wear a face covering in all public indoor spaces and indoor businesses starting on July 25, 2020. The Executive Order applies to everyone, making exemptions for children who are five-years-old and under, and those with a medical condition, mental health condition, or disability that makes it unreasonable for the individual to maintain a face covering.

Included in those settings where masks will be required, are school buildings, both public and nonpublic. Face coverings are generally required for all students, staff, and other persons present in any kindergarten through grade 12 school buildings or district offices or riding on school transportation vehicles. To provide a consistent, safe environment for students and staff, this requirement applies equally to kindergartners, even those aged 5 or under.

Kids Club

Our protocol has changed effective July 27, 2020 to reflect the mandate:

  • Please send your child to Kids Club wearing a mask. It is strongly encouraged to have your child wear one from home that fits well. If the child does not have a mask on, the District will provide a disposable mask the child can wear for the day. Note, the mask may not be kid-sized as we are waiting on a shipment. The child will wear the mask while indoors.
  • The covering should cover the nose and mouth completely, should not be overly tight or restrictive, and should feel comfortable to wear. Types of allowable face coverings include:
    • Paper or disposable mask
    • Cloth face mask
    • Scarf
    • Bandanna
    • Religious face covering

For more information, see the Executive Order or contact Molly Nelson, Kids Club Coordinator, at mnelson@isd12.org with questions.

Students Participating in Summer Activities

Our protocol has changed effective July 27, 2020 to reflect the mandate.

Students must arrive at the school wearing a mask if they enter school buildings. It is strongly encouraged to have your student wear a mask from home that fits well. If the student does not have a mask, a limited supply of disposable masks is available.

  • The face covering should cover the nose and mouth completely, should not be overly tight or restrictive, and should feel comfortable to wear. Types of allowable face coverings include:
    • Paper or disposable mask
    • Cloth face mask
    • Scarf
    • Bandanna
    • Religious face covering

If you are participating in indoor activities, you must always arrive wearing a mask and it may be temporarily removed if:

  • Participating in organized sports in an indoor public space while the level of exertion makes it difficult to wear a face covering.
  • Exercising in an indoor space such as a gym or fitness center, while the level of exertion makes it difficult to wear a face covering, provided that social distancing is always maintained.

If you are participating in an outdoor program and do not enter school facilities, face coverings are not mandatory and guidelines of Centennial’s Sports and Activities Plan will continue to be followed. That plan was created in guidance by the Centers for Disease Control and the Minnesota Department of Health.

For more information see the Executive Order or if you have questions, contact Community Education or your coach/advisor for the activity you participating in.
