What is a Chromebook?

Is it necessary to check out a Chromebook or can students use a personal device?
The Chromebook is the required 1:1 device at this time. It will allow us to facilitate student use and provide all students with course related applications.
What exactly will my student receive?
Each 6th-12th grade student will be assigned an HP Chromebook 11 along with an AC charger. It is expected that students bring Chromebooks fully charged along with the AC adapter to school each day. Devices should be charged using the provided charger only.
Chrome Apps and Extensions
Google Apps and Extensions that have been approved by the school can be installed on the Chromebooks through the Google Play and Chrome Web Store. These are requested by teachers and are made available through Centennial’s management platform. If a student is in need of an educational app, they can discuss with their classroom teacher to confirm and start the request process.
Cameras and Microphones
The Chromebook comes equipped with audio and video recording capabilities through a built-in microphone and camera. All electronic recordings created with the device must comply with District Policies and State and Federal Laws. District policy prohibits the use of electronic recording devices in a manner that compromises the privacy interests of other individuals. District policy also prohibits harassment and bullying (District Policy #514). Users of the Chromebook devices are required to use the device in a manner that complies with these and other District Policies. Use of the Chromebook in a manner that violates District policy may result in revocation of the device and may result in further disciplinary consequence.
Use of the Chromebook and any other devices with audio and video recording capabilities during instructional time is at the discretion of the teacher and the student must obtain prior approval to use the device for such purposes. Any electronic recordings obtained with the recording device are for instructional/educational purposes and individual use. Therefore, electronic recordings obtained with the Chromebook may not be shared, published or re-broadcasted for any reason by the student without permission. Furthermore, users of the Chromebook should be aware that State and Federal laws in many instances prohibit secret or surreptitious recording undertaken without the knowledge and consent of the person or persons being recorded. Violations of State and Federal recording laws may be reported to the proper authorities and may result in criminal prosecution.
Content Filtering
In accordance with the Child Internet Protection Act, all Centennial Schools Chromebooks are filtered, blocking access to inappropriate online content whether the device is at school or at home. This cloud-based filter overrides any filtering you may have at home. Many home routers do allow for time limits to be set for network traffic so parents may choose to do this.

Security
Always keep an eye on your assigned Chromebook. Never leave a Chromebook unattended. When not in your personal possession, the Chromebook should be in a secure environment. Unattended Chromebooks will be collected and stored in the school office.
Chromebooks should always remain in the assigned student's possession. Do not lend your Chromebook to another person. Each Chromebook is assigned to an individual and the responsibility for the care of the Chromebook rests with that individual.
Each Chromebook has a unique identification tag and at no time should the label be modified or removed. Users needing a replacement identification tag will be assessed a $15 fee.
Technology Policies
Access to the technology in Centennial Schools ISD12 has been established for educational purposes. All electronic technologies must be used in support of the educational program of the District. This access is a privilege and may be revoked at any time for abusive or inappropriate conduct related to the use of electronic technologies.
Failure to comply with the District’s Bullying Prohibition Policy #514, Technology Acceptable Use and Safety Policy #524, or the guidelines stated in this document for care and use of the Chromebook may result in the loss of privilege to take the Chromebook home or use the Chromebook in general.
The Chromebook is the property of Centennial Schools ISD12 and as a result may be seized and reviewed at any time. The student should have no expectation of privacy of materials found on an ISD12 Chromebook.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the Chromebook be used everyday and all day?
Use of the Chromebook is always within the teacher’s discretion and how it fits into the instructional design each day. There may be class periods when the Chromebook is used constantly and other periods where it may not be used at all.
What if students are experiencing technical issues?
Students will be taught and should be knowledgeable of basic device troubleshooting. Students with device problems beyond basic troubleshooting should be referred to the media center at the Middle School and High School. Occasionally, a student may need to drop off the device in exchange for a loaner during the day, but since all work should be saved to Google Drive, there is virtually no disruption to accessing work.
Can I connect the school issued Chromebook to my home WiFi?
Absolutely. This can be done through the WiFi settings found through the Settings menu in the bottom right corner of the Chromebook.
Can I change my password?
Students have the ability to recover and change their password at any time through myid.isd12.org.
Will the only method of security be a password? Is there any other type of Identity Management?
Centennial Chromebooks will only allow students and staff to login with their Centennial credentials. Each device is also assigned through a device management system to each student with information such as serial number, mac address, repair history, protection plan enrollment, ...etc.
What if we don’t have internet access at home?
Families that do not have internet access at home can contact the school office for assistance to check out a hot spot.
How long will the battery last?
The school-issued Chromebook should be charged using the provided AC charger and brought to school ready to use each day. Fully charged device batteries will typically last 10-12 hours of use (this may vary depending on type of use). Waiting to charge the device until the charge is low will extend the battery life. It is the student’s responsibility to charge the device at home and ensure it is ready for the school day. Failure to do so may result in the student’s inability to participate in classroom learning activities that day.
Can I print from the Chromebook?
Printers can be connected to Chromebooks at home if they are compatible. In most cases, students will be able to turn in assignments electronically. If a student needs to print a document, they can work with their classroom teacher or media center staff.
Can a family purchase a case for the Chromebook?
Yes, families can purchase a protective case that fits an HP Chromebook 11. This is optional.
Can a family block websites or set time limits on the student Chromebook?
Chromebooks are filtered in accordance with the Child Internet Protection Act. There are many solutions that families can use to monitor, limit, or filter a home WiFi network. It is important to note that home filtering solutions could possibly interfere with online resources needed for coursework. Open DNS and Disney Circle are two common solutions.
