Grades K-5 Shift to Distance Learning

November 13, 2020

The impact of the COVID-19 virus is making it difficult to continue in the current model of hybrid learning. In our schools, Centennial is experiencing exponential growth in COVID cases among staff and students, including those with lab-confirmed cases, in isolation, or in self-quarantine. In our communities, the number of COVID cases continues to increase and case counts are above the State-recommended guidelines in the Governor’s Safe Learning Plan for having students in our classrooms.

After meeting with the Regional Support Team—staff from the Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Department of Education, and Anoka County Department of Health—this week, the recommendation was made to move students in grades K-5 to distance learning due to the growth in COVID cases at our schools combined with the rising cases in Anoka County.

Centennial will follow the Regional Support Team’s recommendation to move grades K-5 to distance learning beginning November 30. This change in the learning model does not impact our students currently in distance learning. COVID data shows 75.9 cases per 10,000 people in Anoka County (per the Governor’s Safe Learning Plan, a threshold of 50 cases per 10,000 people in the county indicates a shift for elementary students). Superintendents of schools in Anoka County also met to discuss the impact of COVID cases on their schools.
