Lisa Giebink Named WCCO's Educator of the Week

January 31, 2017
WCCO TV reporter with Lisa Giebink
WCCO surprised Lisa Giebink with the Educator of the Week award.

Lisa Giebink, Early Childhood Speech Clinician and former Rice Lake parent, was named WCCO's Educator of the Week. WCCO crew suprised Lisa with the award.

She teaches  families in their homes how to help their child learn to communicate since she knows that communication happens all day long. It isn't the one-hour visit that is done each week that makes a difference, but the parents' ability to carry out the techniques that she demonstrates for them after she's left the house.

Lisa is committed to professional development to improve her areas of expertise.  When she had infants and toddlers with feeding issues she volunteered her time one day a week to go down to a hospital feeding clinic to shadow the therapists and improve her skills. When her caseload of young children with autism increased she went to multiple trainings to learn how to deal with very young children on the Autism Spectrum Disorder, and she continues to be involved in the Northeast Autism Task Force. When our school district needed someone to go over to the elementary school to assist the building speech clinicians at another school one day a week, she was the first speech clinician that stepped up to do that.  She is an early adopter of all technology and has been instrumental in assisting our special education with administrative reporting.

In her personal time she is very involved in the community. Lisa volunteers her time with the YMCA Special Olympics Young Athletes Program every Tuesday night to help the children communicate with the coaches and helps manage behaviors. She sews and alters dresses for the Pageant of Hope for Young Women with Developmental Disabilities and has sewn end-of-life gowns from donated wedding dresses for infants who have died. Lisa also contributes her photography talent by photographing the annual CAEF Gala.
